5 of My Favourite Wellness and Self-Healing Books

The Self-Healing Qualities of Reading a Book

I love a good book whether it's fact or fiction. I just really enjoy a good read and in this digital age it's nice to have some time away from the screen. I spend a lot of time choosing a book. I like it to look and feel nice and I think this is all part of the reading experience.

There are so many books, websites, podcasts and online information on well-being and self-healing. It's very difficult to know where to start. So I have put together a list (in no particular order) of my favourite books on this subject. It is not just the content but also the look and feel of the book itself.

The Little Book of Hygge - by Meik Wiking

Firstly, this is one of the most beautiful looking books I have ever purchased. The colours are calming, the design is so delightfully put together and the whole feel of the book is exquisite.
Hygge is a Danish way of life that encompasses the art of creating cosiness and taking great pleasure from the presence of comfort and friendship. It's about hot cocoa and sweet pastries, warm blankets and candlelight, choosing the right lighting, planning cosy dinner parties and sharing everyday moments with loved ones and close friends.
The book shows you how to create and capture moments of happiness, gratitude and harmony. It's very difficult not to feel the self-healing properties of this charmingly, alluring book.
The author Meik Wiking is the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen and has spent years studying the magic of Hygge. Denmark is often said to be the happiest country in the World. There is definitely something wholesome about a Hygge lifestyle. My Full Book Review

Ikiagai - Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles

This is the Japanese secret to a long and happy life. The people of Japan believe that everyone has an ikigai - a reason to jump out of bed each morning.
This book will guide you to find your purpose in life and how to leave the stress of the world behind you. It teaches you how to nurture your friendships and throw yourself into your passions.
The secret to a long and happy life is to slow down and relax. You live much longer if you are not in a hurry and enjoy each moment as it arrives.
There is a chapter on the nutritious diets and eating habits of people in the world who have lived the longest and healthiest lives. There is another chapter dedicated to gentle movements and exercise to promote health and longevity.
Ikigai is about finding flow in everything you do. There are tools to help you turn work and free time into spaces for growth and happiness.
This really is a lovely book about the positive side of ageing, finding a true purpose to your being and how to live a true and meaningful life. Recommended Website - A Journey Through My Diverse Perspectives

The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down - Haemin Sunim

A beautifully illustrated guide to mindfulness and spiritual advice. This book was written by Haemin Sunim, a Zen Buddhist Monk born in Korea. This book is a calming reminder of the strength and joy that comes from slowing down.
Haemin Sunim used social media to guide people through life's challenges and the value of slowing down. He connected with people through his Twitter and Facebook platforms. He did not anticipate the outpouring of response to his advice and teachings. The number of followers on his Twitter and Facebook accounts continued to increase.
He became known as the "healing mentor" and was approached by a publishing company offering to turn his social media writings into a book.
This guide has eight gratifying chapters dealing with various issues in life and how mindfulness can help and guide us at each challenge and stage.
This is a book full of positive and captivating guidance and I have read this several times, always seeing a new perspective with each read.

The Nordic Guide to Living 10 Years Longer - Dr Bertil Marklund

This intriguing book is about the even-keeled approach of the Swedish to a life of balance. There are ten areas of life we should focus on to better our own chances of a long and healthy life. Not only is the cover of this book ornate and opulent but the cutting edge advice may appear to go against all the guidelines we have been led to believe.
Did you know that drinking coffee will promote your health (this was music to my ears), or that more people die from lack of Vitamin D than they do with skin cancer?
Dr Bertil Marklund is a physician with over 20 years experience in clinical patient care. His interests turned to health promotion - how to stay healthy and live longer rather than focusing on disease and death.
The Swedish term "lagom" translates roughly as "just the right amount." This can be applied to every aspect of your life from the amount of coffee that you consume to the amount of exercise you do in a day. It equates to a perfect balance and the Swedish idea of moderation.
Dr Marklund delves into each of the 10 areas of life with sound advice on how to improve each one, debunks myths on the things we have been told are not good for us and guides us towards bringing health and longevity back into our life.

Meditation - Linda Williamson

This lovely little "how to" handbook is tastefully designed and beautifully illustrated.
If you have never tried meditating before then this is a great first time read.
It starts with the basics of how to meditate and continues with setting an ambience and the benefits you will feel with each practice.
This book covers many areas of the spiritual world such as the Chakras, healing and symbols to describing the different types of meditations such as mindfulness, visualisation and mantras.
Meditation is a personal practice and this little book introduces you to the different pathways you can use to reach total relaxation and inner calm.
Meditation needs to be practised regularly and routinely to gain the full benefits, so you need to find what works best for you.
By following the instructions in this visually pleasing guide you will learn how to focus the mind and discover peace and stillness in the moment.

Reading a good book

I have noticed that books are returning to the shelves at long last. There is a place for 'screen' reading for sure. If you need to research a subject or look for something specifically then the internet can find information at the click of a button.

Reading a book is perhaps more a leisure activity and something we should look forward to. Books are not just a source of information but an enjoyable pursuit that keeps our minds alert and stimulates the brain whilst still being able to relax and find pleasure in this activity.

Research has shown that reading can lower blood pressure and improve sleep quality. Reading keeps your brain active and promotes mental and emotional well-being. Reading a good book also:
  • reduces stress and helps you to relax
  • improves your concentration and memory
  • enhances your vocabulary and strengthens your writing skills
  • Boosts your knowledge
  • Increases your creativity and imagination
