The Benefits of Sea Views and being close the Ocean
The Benefits of a Sea View
Sea views and ocean vistas increase our well-being and wellness. The relaxing sounds of the waves with the colour of blue promoting calmness and tranquillity. There is a great deal of research, at present, into the benefits of our proximity to the sea. These studies accentuate the health benefits and healing properties of the rhythm, sounds and scents of an ocean environment. Listening to the sound of the ocean waves can encourage healthier sleep patterns and the sea air can support a better nights sleep.
Ocean views can contribute to our mental and emotional well-being, boosting our mood and overall mental health. Looking at an ocean vista promotes relaxation, a feeling of calm and enhances our creativity whilst reducing our stress and anxiety levels.
Although the ocean encourages relaxation and calm for the mind, our body can feel more energised. We may feel like taking a long walk along the coast or spending some time swimming, snorkelling or surfing. This is the 'Blue Gym' effect, using the coastal environment to enhance our physical and mental health.
Being Close to the Ocean
I always find that a day by the seaside, swimming or paddle-boarding makes me feel energised. I can really notice the benefits of being close to the ocean. A stroll along the promenade is therapeutic and feels like a dose of natural medicine. If you feel the stress and tension of life then this can be a boosting tonic to improve your mood and increase your sense of well-being.
The ocean has cleansing benefits too. The clean salty air is restorative and is filled with negative ions. Our body encourages deep breaths of this fresh pure air to enhance our well-being. Negative ions (despite the name) are positive for our wellness. Negative ions are molecules that float around in the air and have been charged with electricity. Exposure to negative ions can reduce signs of depression and SAD (Seasonal Affected Disorder).
So whether you are physically active on the ocean, strolling along the prom or relaxing on a sunbed, spending time by the sea has many positive effects on our well-being and health:
The benefits:
- helps to regulate sleep patterns and boost our mood
- stress and anxiety reduction
- increases our happy hormones
- improve respiration by clearing lungs and sinuses
- lowers blood pressure
- enhances the function of our immune system
- increases energy levels.
- the rhythmic sounds of the waves promote mental clarity
Sunsets and the Sea
Adding even more health benefits to your mind, body and soul is to watch a sunset on the beach or at sea. There is nothing more healing than a walk around the decks or along the beach at sunset. It is a time of reflection and recuperation as the day comes to an end. As the sun slowly lowers to the level of the horizon, we watch with inspiration and gratitude.
Sunsets have inspired so much creativity and innovation from art and photography to music and poetry. The backdrop of the soothing colours of orange, red and yellows can feel meditative and mindful for both the spirit and the soul.
A sunset is not just an awe inspiring vision of beauty, it also has a huge impact on our mind and body. Watching the array of comforting colours reduces our cortisol level (stress hormone) and triggers a release of our happy hormone (dopamine), boosting our mood, motivation, creativity and energy levels.
I am so grateful to live the life that I do. I make sure that I take advantage of the natural energy boosting and healing medicine of sunsets. Working on cruise ships and oversea retreats I can add sunset walks or yoga sequences to induce these mindful and meditative states into my days. Nothing beats a stroll or a meditation during the sunset to appreciate beauty with gratitude and to find peace in the natural world.
Adding a Sunset into your Day
Add the sunset to your day to remind you each day comes to an end before a new dawn begins. It prompts you to realise a bad day will not last forever. Sunsets teach you gratitude with their beauty and magic. Your well-being will thank you for this.
- Find your favourite view point, whether it's on the beach, in a park or a view from a window.
- Take part in the sunset by listening, observing and opening your senses in the moments around you whilst the sun is setting.
- Sit in peace. Switch off any distractions such as notification sounds and phone calls. You deserve a few minutes a day to seek serenity.
- Allow your heart to feel gratitude and appreciation.
- Take a moment to breathe, slow down and sit in calm and tranquillity.
No two sunsets are the same. Sunsets illustrate peace, closure and the promise of a new day ahead. The glowing colours remind us of the deep and heartfelt beauty of life.
