Can Colours Affect Your Mood - Colour Therapy

Can Colours Heal Mental and Physical Health Issues?

Using colours to lift our mood is not a new science. The ancient Greeks and Egyptians were the first to discover the therapeutic healing of colour.

Hippocrates described how sunlight could be used to treat health disorders and the Greeks called this sun therapy or Heliotherapy. In ancient Egypt they believed that shining the rays of light through coloured crystals could infiltrate the body and effectively heal both physical and mental ailments.

Although holistic healing is becoming more and more popular in the western world , it is not widely accepted in the medical profession with some experts considering this type of therapy as some kind of "humbuggery"

Choosing the Right Colour

We have all felt the effects of colour at some point in our lives. Some colours lift our mood whilst others can feel oppressive. Each person feels different emotions when it comes to choosing a colour. If you think about the seasons and how this can affect your mood. I am definitely an Autumn and Winter person. I love the Autumn colours - the orange, yellows and reds and even on a cold November day I enjoy a walk in nature through the seasons colours. I am also partial to the pure white and sharp blues of a frosty and cold winters day. Not everyone likes the build up to winter, but for me, my favourite months are October, November and December.

My favoured colours are green, blue and orange and I tend to have these colours in plenty around my home and in my wardrobe.
I have many green plants and succulents in my lounge with a splash of orange here and there with lots of soft lighting. I tend to furnish my home with light blues and greens in the summer months and darker greens and orange in the autumn and winter months. I love thick fleece blankets and scented candles during these months too.
When I first decorate a home, I do like the pure white colours with blue hews. It makes everything look new and fresh. But after a while I feel I need the autumn colours to make me feel cosy and cheerful.
Surrounding yourself with the right colours can improve your mood, relieve stress and can help you have a good nights sleep. The colours you encompass yourself with can influence your outlook and emotions. It is however important to have the right balance.

The Magic of Colours and their Interpretations

In colour therapy it is believed that individual colours are able to penetrate the body to promote healing and emotional well-being. Using colours to decorate your home

Think about the colours and their benefits and where this suits you best in your home.

Bathrooms and Kitchens often benefit from the colour yellow to add happiness and joy to the room. Dining rooms will feel calm and relaxing with tones of blue and green. A little pink and red will add love and passion to a bedroom but don't forget to add some hews of blue and green to promote restful sleep and relaxation.  If you have a room for exercise and workouts then add orange and red for energy, health and life. For your guest room add some lilac, mauve and purple for a feeling of grandeur, royalty and luxury. If you have some work-space (a desk or area in your sitting room) try adding some bright yellow pictures, post it notes, stationary, notepads, reading lamp shade, pencil holder and plant pot holder. Yellow is associated with optimism, happiness and intellect which bodes well when you need to focus. Your hobby area should include the colour of blue for calm and orange to stimulate creativity.

Explore the world of colour and see how this can impact your emotional well-being. Whether you are looking to decorate your home, your office space or just to enhance your health. Understanding the benefits of colour on your mood and behaviour can be a valuable lesson.
