Teaching Yoga - Corfu Yoga Retreat and the Benefits of the Sea with Nature

Teaching Yoga Overseas - Sea Views and Nature

There is something special about working and living overseas. I was so lucky on my very first adventure 20+ years ago, when I decided to pack a suitcase and disappear into the sunset! I had just experienced an upsetting marriage break-up and wanted to get away. I worked for a holiday company and was assigned to Cyprus. I had never been there before, but fell in love with the island.

This first experience of working abroad turned out well for me and my life then evolved around travel, fitness and many adventures. I continued to work overseas and then onboard cruise ships. I have been back in the UK for 8 years and I am lucky enough to be in the position to have a few more escapades ahead of me. I have once again worked onboard a cruise ship as a Fitness on the go Class Instructor and returned at the end of last year.

A new opportunity has now come my way as a Yoga Instructor in a beautiful Yoga retreat on the island of Corfu, Greece. I am so excited about this as I have never taught yoga in a retreat before. I will be able to instruct energising, invigorating flows in the morning as the sun rises and gentle, relaxing flows with meditation as the sun sets in the evening.

The Benefits of Yoga on the Beach and with Nature

The biggest benefits of working overseas rather than in the UK is of course the weather. I live on the south coast of England and the weather is very 'hit and miss'. There is a beautiful sandy beach close to where I live, but with such unreliable climates it is a hard task to organise 'Sun Salutations' at sunrise if it's cloudy and pouring with rain.

Weather in the Mediterranean is pretty much guaranteed, so all your classes can be organised in advance without the worry of a sudden temperature or climate change. To practice yoga outside in nature or on a terrace overlooking the sea has numerous benefits and meditating with a sunset in the background can bring ample well-being comforts.

Vitamin D

Practising yoga and meditation on the beach or outside in the fresh air will boost your Vitamin D intake. This vitamin is essential for your bone and muscle health and increases the efficiency of calcium absorption. Vitamin D keeps your mood happy and your body healthy.

Deepens your Meditation Practice

There is nothing better than a 'meditation' by the sea. Just the sound of the ocean and the gentle sea breeze is enough to bring the body and mind into full relaxation. A Sun Salutation flow will be energised with the gentle heat of the sun and the movement of the waves and poses such as 'Child's' pose' will be more relaxing and deepening.

Closer to Nature

During your yoga practice you will feel more grounded sensing the sand beneath your feet and the sun's rays on your skin. Yoga and meditation outside enhances your mood making you feel calmer and more positive. Another benefit of the beach is that the sand is soft and supporting, almost acting as a cushion. So any challenging poses or a momentary loss of balance, will less likely cause you any injury as opposed to the hard flooring of a studio.

Boosts your Energy Levels

Practising outside by the sea boosts your energy levels. Salty sea air is full of valuable negative ions that revitalise cellular metabolism. They enhance immune function, purify your blood, balance the autonomic nervous system, promote deep sleep and nurture a healthy digestive system.

Yoga Retreat - Activities for Yogi's off the Mat

There is so much to do here on this Corfu Yoga Retreat - that is 'on and off' the mat and I am so pleased that I will be leading or joining in the activities.

The whole idea of a retreat is to detach from normal, everyday life and totally relax and alleviate any stress. Yoga and Meditation is just part of your journey to self discovery. It is all about rest, revitalise and self-transformation.
