The Effectiveness of Music and it's Ability to Heal and Unite
The Therapeutic Power of Music in Healing
There is something about music that resonates with all human beings. It heals us, it brings back memories, it excites us, it makes us feel good and can bring groups of like minded people together.
Music induces many emotions within us. Music makes us happy, sad and even makes us want to get up and dance the night away. How many times have you heard a tune that stimulates a specific memory? A song from your teenage years and first love, a song that brings tears to your eyes or a tune that instantly makes you smile?
Music is a therapy and helps to lower the symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression and trauma. Make yourself a playlist which brings you the emotions of happiness and laughter and keep it handy. Next time you feel low, or the weather outside is dark and depressing, play your list and feel your mood lift.
Music can also contribute to emotional healing such as grief, sadness and fear. Music can help us to express how we feel when we need to release such intense emotions. Music is a source of comfort and love in times of such distress. Studies have shown that music releases our 'happy hormones' which further reduce our feelings of anxiety and stress and promote our healing process.
Music as a Therapy
Music can play a powerful role in promoting a healthy mental awareness and a positive impact on our mental state and physical well-being.
Music therapy can help in various health and well-being issues such as:
The promotion of relaxation
Notice how you feel listening to meditation or spa-style music. It brings peace, calm and relaxation to both body and mind. This is why beauty salons and massage rooms play this soothing music to induce the atmosphere of peace and tranquility. Promoting relaxation and peace also provides a great distraction from negative and reoccurring thoughts.
Stress reduction
Music can have a positive and calming effect on both the body and mind. This is why it is beneficial to listen to soothing music in times of stress. If you have a job interview, a long journey or a stressful meeting at work, listen to some relaxing melodies that will distract your thoughts enough to enable you to cope with the challenge ahead of you.
Reduce pain levels
Music can be used to perform the practice of rhythmical breathing techniques. Using the diaphragm (deep breathing using the rib-cage and belly) rather than shallow, quick breaths (which normally accompany pain) and focusing on the rhythmic and steady beat of music aids relaxation and calming of the mind and body. This type of therapy reduces blood pressure and levels of anxiety associated with chronic pain which can reduce the distressing levels of suffering.
Enhances the feelings of ease from grief and trauma
Words cannot always express how we feel when deep emotion fills our body. Listening to music associated with good times and happy memories can help those who are suffering to connect to others. Music can bring together sorrow and joy connecting deep emotional anguish with times of happiness making it conceivable to heal unlimited emotional sadness.
Dementia and Alzheimers Disease
Music can help improve the life of those with Dementia and Alzheimer disease. Patients still have the capability to engage in music even late on in these illnesses and can help to recall old memories as well as decrease confusion and disorder.
Parkinsons Disease
Music therapy can help those patients with Parkinsons. The rhythm of music may complement the connection between movement and listening, with improvements seen in balance, coordination, longer strides, timing and posture. The vibrations from the music can be felt as well as heard and the patient may show signs of decreased body stiffness and reduced tremors.

What happens in a Music Therapy Session:
A therapist will help you choose a therapy that's right for you:
With the therapist you may:
Sing: Use your voice to sing to some music
Play an Instrument: Play and share the music
Improvise: Make music to reflect how you are feeling
Move to the Music: Tap your feet or dance with your feelings
Listen to Music: Tell your therapist how this music makes you feel
Lyrics: Interpret the lyrics and feel what they mean to you.
Active Intervention
This means you play a role in the therapy session. You may write music, play an instrument or sing.
Receptive Intervention
This means that you will listen to music and discuss with your therapist your thoughts and how you feel.
Both interventions along with the therapist is a way of processing your line of thinking, mindset and your mental state.
