Understanding your Energy Givers and Energy Takers

What does Energy Givers and Energy Takers mean?

We are human beings, dynamic and energetic souls. We feel energy all around us, in nature and with the people we meet and share our lives with.

We feel motivated, inspired and positive in some activities we do and feel happy and energised with some of the people we connect with. Energy is given to us through the things we love and enjoy. We do however, feel the opposite with activities we dislike or with people who seem to drain every ounce of vitality from our body. These are the energy givers and takers we allow into our lives.

With everything in life there are activities and people we love and those we don't. There would be no challenge to our existence if every day was full of energy givers. As nice as that sounds, we do need to balance our daily activities and responsibilities. We have a duty of responsibility and care towards tasks and towards others and not all of these will be energising.

What we actually need to do is recognise who and what gives us vitality and what drains us of energy. Ask yourself questions during your day to day life. Notice the things and 'the who' that inspire and rejuvenate you and pay attention to your energy levels when you are taking part in activities and with people that seem to drag the vivacity and zest out of your spirit and being.

We have to look at ourselves too. Are we energy givers or takers? Well, maybe we are a bit of both. Remember the days when you wake up and feel great. You take this energy with you wherever you go, but if you wake up and feel low and fed up, you will also take this negative energy to the activities and people you connect with. We must not be judgemental here? Becoming aware and noticing your energy and the energy around you will bring a little more balance to your daily life. There will be those people and tasks that bring a little of both. We just need to tap into our awareness each day.

Energy Givers and Energy Takers

The Japanese have a concept called 'Ikigai' that encourages people to discover what truly matters to them. To live their life with energy and passion and to fill it with purpose and enjoyment. By applying this concept to your own personal energy field, your pursuits and your connections will bring you harmony and invigorate your day.

To live a healthy life full of energy and vitality, we must surround ourselves with the things that feed us energy and the people that inspire us. Find a passion that energises your mind and body, engage with positive people and recharge your spirit and soul in activities of joy and motivation.

Energy Givers

  • making time for hobbies
  • play your favourite music
  • spend time in nature and outdoors
  • eat a healthy and balanced diet
  • spend time alone, reflecting in quiet moments
  • take rest days
  • enjoy quality sleep
  • socialise with good company and conversations
  • exercise regularly, go on long walks, lift weights
  • Stretch every day for 10 minutes.

Energy Takers

  • consuming negative media
  • people pleasing
  • doom scrolling
  • surrounding yourself with negative people
  • overworking
  • overthinking
  • not living in the present moment
  • procrastinating
  • chasing after people that do not deserve you
  • clutter and mess
  • changing yourself for people that do not accept you as you are.
The above lists are just a few ideas to help revitalise your personal energy vibes. As I mentioned before, there will be days when you wake up with a bad aura. Not every day can be a high energy day. There could be nights that you are unable to sleep, or days when you are worried and overthink, or perhaps days where it is unavoidable not to overwork. These are acceptable days and will happen. This is where your reflection and awareness will help you understand why your energy level was low.

Managing your Energy

Spending time with energy givers helps you feel positive, inspired and happy. Your energy is lifted and your day feels calm and pleasant. Being aware of everything that gives you energy and good vibes will help you to manage and balance your energy levels.
  • Self-care is important here. Make sure you allow time for you, whether it's just a long soak in the bath or reading your favourite book in peace, you need to care for your own energy and vibe.
  • Surround yourself with positive people and those who offer support and kindness
  • Make sure you set boundaries with those who take advantage of you or those who take your acts of caring and kindness for granted. They will continue to do this unless you take action
  • Make sure you journal each day and reflect often. This will help you see the energy givers and takers to enable you to take action and make adjustments to preserve your energy.
  • Meditation is an energy protecting tool. Meditation brings you to the present moment and helps you to focus on the here and now. Meditation quietens the negative chatter in the mind and stops the mind from overthinking.
  • Hydration is important for maintaining your energy levels. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stop dehydration. It is recommended that we consume at least 6-8 glasses of water each day.
  • Get outside for at least an hour a day. Just 15 minutes outside in the sunlight will help your body absorb vitamin D which is essential for bone health. Lack of vitamin D can cause low levels of energy and increase the chances of depression and anxiety
  • Exercise is so important for good vibes and vitality. A brisk walk, a yoga sequence, cycling or swimming can change your energy level instantly. Exercise releases happy hormones and a feel good factor even if your day didn't start well.
  • Take some time in your day to declutter and make some space. A messy environment can drag the vibrancy from both mind and body. Clutter can affect your ability to focus and make clear, concise decisions. A clear out does not mean spending hours shifting through your belongings. It can be as simple as clearing your desk or draining board and just putting things away.
You can be in control of your own energy levels by putting aside some time to increase your own energy levels. This in turn will help you as an 'energy giver' full of good vibes and positivity. Bad energy days do not have to stay that way. There are several things you can do to help increase vitality, even if it's just a 30 minute walk. This can lead to a more purposeful life, better relationships with your partner, friends and work colleagues. If your energy levels are constantly low and you are complaining of being exhausted and unhappy, you will more than likely make an impact on those around you and find that people may want to stay clear of you.

Be mindful of your personal energy levels and the environment around you. Be aware of energy givers and energy takers and focus on giving time to those that bring positive, energetic vibes into your days. This will bring a more fulfilling and meaningful life and a much healthier outlook on living.
