My New Life Adventure
After the decision to make a new life and not being a novice to working overseas, I prepared myself to '
be thrown in the deep end' with this being the normal working procedure and the way things tend to happen. There is never too much training or contracts to sign or time to settle in, it's just straight into the job. I had brought a few sequences with me as I am not a '
fast flow' yoga teacher, I am more of a gentle pace and meditation teacher.
My first practice was thankfully, a slow flow class and I did just that. Gentle poses with meditation to finish. The most amazing part of this practice was the studio (being outside and close to the sea) with the sound of the ocean and the warmth of the sun's rays during the practice. Being UK based, my classes are normally studio based so this was an extra special moment for me. However, what I was not expecting was meditation to the sunset. I am not exaggerating when I say I felt quite emotional.
It was so beautiful I could not let the guests lay down in 'Savasana' and miss this beautiful sunset. We all sat in our meditation and gazed at the sky to the sound of the ocean waves. This was an incredible experience and one I will never forget.
The yoga schedule for the guests was a morning energetic flow and an evening relaxing flow with meditations each day. The classes consisted of brand new yogi's to advanced yogi's, so it could be quite challenging to teach but I came here for an adventure and challenges come with the territory.
Life continued every day with amazing sunsets and practice outside on this wonderful rooftop studio. There were a couple of days that required the classes to be indoors due to adverse weather conditions. Even in the Mediterranean, surprise tropical storms appear from nowhere!
What Other Adventures Lay Ahead
Other than yoga practices, this was also an activities holiday where the guests could choose to join in if they wished. On the Yogi schedule there were two hikes, kayaking, trips into town and other seaside resorts and a workshop once a week. Every day there was an activity to enjoy and as Yoga teachers we also took part in these activities as either a guide or helper if the numbers were high.
The hikes were stunning. Agios Gordios is surrounded by hills so the views are magnificent. One of the hikes was quite a steep climb, through natural pathways with wonderful sea views and a visit to a very quaint Greek Village. The other hike took you to a viewpoint and a monastery, finishing with a swim in the sea and a stroll along the beach.

Kayaking was a great adventure for me as I knew I would also get the chance to paddleboard. The guests had a choice to either kayak (for two) or paddleboard from the beach outside the hotel to a private beach about 4 kilometers away. I have always wanted to paddleboard. The first time I went on this activity, the group was really big. The instructor asked me to stay at the back and encourage those that were behind to follow the group ahead of them. Once he saw me approaching he would know that all the guests were present and he could then do a head count. I absolutely loved paddleboarding and I managed to stand for about 2 minutes before toppling over, much to the groups amusement. It was all good fun.
10 Weeks Later - How do I feel
I have been in Corfu for a total of 10 weeks now - living the life as a Yoga teacher on a beautiful island. How do I feel? This was a fantastic opportunity and I am so grateful for this amazing experience. The island of Corfu is stunning with incredible sea views, a beautiful climate and a wonderful Mediterranean lifestyle. I was so happy to be here. I met some extremely interesting people from all over the world and had so much fun with them, both on the mat and off the mat during the activities.
I love Yoga, but I miss teaching fitness classes. I initially came from the Fitness industry and I am used to gym life and cardio exercise. I did however, get plenty of cardio fitness exercise with the abundance of hills and steps surrounding me here in Corfu, but sadly there was no gym close by.
I am still extremely grateful for this most fulfilling episode in my life and I gained so much practical and physical knowledge of Yoga and some new teaching skills. An experience I will always treasure.
